The most recent time I heard this quote it was on the movie Love Actually; my wife and I watched it on Valentine’s Day evening. While the movie depicts people telling one another that love is blind, they are all speaking of love for romantic partners. The sentiment of this saying is much more universal than romantic love. It means that we should be willing to listen to all the things that our loved ones have to say, not just what they have to say about their significant other.
